Why Bequia?

Pictures from Commodore's Visit Nov 2007

by Commodore Michael Fortenbaugh

Our club first sailed into Bequia in late January 2006 at the end of that winter's Caribbean Regatta.  It had been a windy trip and I kept holding out the carrot to skippers that soon we would arrive in Bequia, "the promised land."

But when we arrived, even I was not prepared for the beauty of this Caribbean jewel.

It took only a few hours for me to come to the realization that this was where our sailing club and sailing school should open up winter headquarters.  And the more I learned about the island and it's people and sea faring traditions, the more certain I was.

After months of hard work in New York City, with our skyscrapers, concrete, steel, speed, pressure, competition and challenge, Bequia is the perfect antidote.  It is the reward.

Bequia is one of the most beautiful islands in all the Caribbean

When you can look out from the Frangipani across Admiralty Bay, you can be at peace with yourself, your world and your future.

It is my hope that our sailing club from Manhattan will be able to create a lasting and meaningful relationship with this great island, culture and people.
