This will be "Team Excelsior's" fifth Regatta and we are again inviting all sailors who want to experience overnight and longer-distance sailing.  We plan to depart St. Martin on Sunday, sail overnight, join up with the rest of the fleet at North Sound Virgin Gorda on Monday, and continue the Regatta with them.  This will be a one-way charter, so sailors will need to fly into St. Martin and return from the BVI.  We are also offering ASA Bareboating and Advanced Coastal Cruising for sailors wishing to advance in the ASA training program.  Jon Taylor is an ASA Instructor Evaluator and USCG-licensed Master.  He cruises from Maine to Virginia on his Beneteau 393, and has chartered in the Caribbean (Windwards, Leewards, and Western) and Greece.  He has been sailing since 1986 and instructing with the School since 1999.  This is his tenth De Caribbean Regatta.  He taught Advanced Coastal Cruising during the 2006, 2008, 2009, and 2010 Regattas and has been told that his jokes are continuing to improve.

Sunshine in winter is intoxicating... So are rustic rum huts on sugary-sand beaches after a long sail - especially if you have a cool adult beverage in your suntanned hands and are standing in awe of the "green flash". Combine all this together and they form a dangerous compound known to scientists as FUN! Our destination this year: the Fabulous British Virgin Islands - everyone's favorite! Our origin: Oyster Pond, on the French/Dutch border in St. Martin. This year's sailing adventure (team "Vigilance") will be running in tandem with the sloop "Excelsior" - sailing to the BVIs overnight from St. Martin/St. Maarten and adding Advanced Coastal Cruising to our training menu - which already includes Bareboat Chartering and Coastal Cruising. This is a one-way training charter, which will finish in Tortola...  Road Town, the Bitter End, Jost Van Dyke, Norman Island - these are the places of legend we'll visit. The cruise on "Vigilance" is carefully designed as a leisurely sail cruising adventure with equal amounts of sun, fun, extended sailing and a wee-bit of study too! Team Vigilance will afford you the chance to form lifetime bonds and memories. The name I chose for DCR2011 is meant to embody the qualities of our mission: alertly watchful and awake, especially to new adventures and fun events! On this large monohull yacht, our theme centers mostly around the sailing, but we'll definitely not miss a beat in the festivities, too. This "First 100" Skipper-mentor/member of the Club, Blue Water Society inductee, veteran of many Caribbean charters, and Instructor at the School looks forward to sailing and learning with you. Welcome aboard!

It's time once again for the sailing club's annual and all too brief migration to more pleasant latitudes.  You'll be leaving behind the cold and slush, the hustle and bustle, and many who will envy this sojourn in paradise.  So plan to join your new friends and family, or bring the old ones along, as we depart the isle of Manhattan for the British Virgin Islands this coming January.  This will be the inaugural voyage of Ta-Keel-Ya.  Space on all the regatta's boats is limited so consider selecting your fit sooner rather than later.  Matching each boat's personality to her crew goes a long way toward enjoyment, and there are many boat personalities to choose from.  As for Ta-Keel-Ya, she loves sailing as well as relaxing -- and some partying too!  So if your ideal trip is about great fun, building friendships, and no drama than this is the boat for you.  For further information contact me directly -- jdelisky (at) usa.net

I’ve skippered yachts in distant lands from Tahiti to Sicily, and it doesn’t get any better than the BVI! We’ll sail the high seas, snorkel among coral reefs, find a hidden beach, kayak the pristine Caribbean waters and then regale the other crews with our adventures. One of my favorite stops is the Bitter End Yacht club where we’ll have the opportunity to plane in a Laser across the miraculous bay. Each evening we’ll toast the sunset to celebrate the present moment.  I am a certified USCG captain, ASA instructor, avid racer and this will be my sixth trip as a skipper in De Caribbean Regatta, and fourth trip to the BVI. My passion for sailing is matched only by my love for Puccini and Strauss.

1. Skipper - Clifton Yen

Ever wonder why you work so hard? As the days get shorter, the cold weather sets in, and it keeps getting harder to leave work before sunset, just keep remembering that we'll soon be thawing out with our toes in the sand and a rum drink in at least one hand.  If I (and my first mate/better half) learned anything during last year's DCR, it's that every single minute spent sailing in the BVIs beats the best day in the office.  Join us for good hard sailing - but with mellowing detours to places like the Baths, Sandy Cay, and Soper's Hole - and large quantities of expertly mixed painkillers once we get settled in at our day's destination.  We'll be an active boat, and are looking for crew willing to chip in and help out . . . except in Anegada, when we'll be competing to see who can do the least bit of activity.

If you’ve ever spent a winter in New York City then you understand the appeal of a tropical escape.  What better way to enliven the soul than spend 7 sun filled days cruising the BVI’s?  I’m new to the Manhattan Sailing Club, but not to sailing or the Caribbean.  Our boat will be laid back, music filled, and relaxing, with plenty of time spent in the water and on the beach. Come join us... You’ll never regret missing a week of work for the Islands, but the reverse is certainly not true. Feel free to contact me at taylorcollins@hotmail.com.

Boats, Water and Sun – Three things we require for our survival.  That being said let us put our efforts together and start 2011 off proper with a sail around the BVI’s! Our boat this year will be named -“White Swallow”- after the Clipper ship under Captain Elijh E. Knowles, known around the trade routes as a “rum shape [boat] with rag-tag rigging”.  – A little about myself: I have worked as a Mate on the Honorable William Wall and as maintenance staff for the Manhattan Sailing Club and currently I am a sailing instructor for the Manhattan Sailing School.  I grew up sailing in the Gulf of Maine and started captaining my own ship on longer voyages throughout the New England waters and am excited to extend my voyaging to the beautiful Caribbean Sea! – Our vessel will be hands where everyone onboard will have the opportunity to experience the thrill of driving the boat and trimming our sails as we sail from one rum shack to the next!  Feel free to contact me with any further questions dayyanja [at] gmail .com

See paradise from the sea’s perspective with pure adventure every step of the way.  It’s hard to pick a favorite BVI island when each one of them gives you something to behold.  From navigating rugged coast lines, visiting exciting marinas, taking in the Baths, snorkeling the Indians, beaching your body on sand and tearing up the night life! It’s a religious experience. Once you’ve bitten the apple of BVI, sailor’s blood stays with you forever!  About Me: I’ve sailed a salty bit, traveled a bit, taught a bit, went to school and worked in the corporate world forever. From a practical perspective I can swim, cook, read, write and do arithmetic except when under the influence. About You:   Good social skills, willingness to take part in all sailing crew activities (yes, we share turns at the helm, checking the engine, cooking, cleaning, trimming, etc.), open to learning new stuff, and desire to share friendship and fun. When you’re ready to decompress from the depths of city life, come join “ALABANZA” to Praise the Sea!  Also, if anyone wants to achieve their second or third level certifications in the amazing BVI waters, I will be teaching Coastal Cruising and Bareboat Chartering

Lets all kick off our city shoes to spend some 'Island Time' in the most idyllic sailing destination on earth.  The BVI..... a favorite cruising ground for myself and and many others.  Consistent trade wind sailing, stunning white sand beaches and clear turquoise water ( where you drop your anchor at 40' to see it touch down ), are just a few of these islands many delights.  Most of the MSC Members will know me as the voice of North Cove Marina, having been Harbor Master at North Cove for the past two years.  Prior to the North Cove I spent 5 years in the mega yacht industry as chief mate/engineer on 100+ ft sailing yachts.  Over the last 30 years I have logged over 70000 ocean miles. One and a half circumnavigations, 4 Atlantic crossings, and 4  Pacific crossings..... a wealth of sailing knowledge that I wish to pass on to any crew, willing to put up with my easy going, relaxed attitude.  Having sailed my own yacht through the South Pacific, I have noticed a common phrase expressed by the Islanders there and in the Caribbean.... 'Island Time'. Basically meaning things are never going to get done in a hurry.  That is going to be 'Island Time's' mission statement for the week. Take it easy, do a bit of snorkeling, explore the islands, catch a fish or two and in the evenings watch the sun set drinking sundowners with our fellow sailors.  The only exception to all this tranquility would be the sailing part. We all like to sail hard and fast, and that is just what 'Island Time' will do.  Personally I am a virgin to De Caribbean Regatta, but I am certainly no virgin to sailing the Virgin Islands.   Having spent two charter seasons in the BVI, I know this group of islands intimately. And I am keen to share all the hidden gems I know.  Our boat will be a team approach with all onboard taking part part in every aspect of sailing her.  Feel free to contact me at arjenweehuizen@hotmail.com with any questions.

Scheduling conflicts initially made this year doubtful for me, but as of early Nov I've managed to sort that out! So I'm back and psyched as ever to for my third consecutive regatta. About me: former master of the 2009 Vessel "Three Sheets" and 2010 "Blackberries Aweigh!", I grew up sailing the Coast of Maine, but moved to NYC four years ago and have yet to stop thinking about the water.  My background is most notably in commercial fishing: I ran a lobster boat out of Portland for 10 years, fishing the Gulf of Maine year round (like the Discovery Channel), and so am accustomed to all conditions coastal and offshore.  I have 15+ years experience in bare boating, including offshore passages on monohulls/keelboats, catamarans, fore and aft, and square rig tall ships. I focus foremost on safety, sound judgment, and good "situational awareness" but I do so in a relaxed, fun atmosphere with a sense of humor. I would love to teach you anything from the basic physics of sailing to the rebuilding of a diesel engine to the intricacies of a sextant (celestial navigation), or just how to dismantle a clogged marine head! Yes, I will draw it all out on a whiteboard! I will gladly let you run the boat under my supervision, but if you feel lazy I'm also there to pick up the slack. Supposedly a decent cook, I have done leg of lamb, baby back ribs, and a 20 lb turkey on prior voyages.  By day I am a surgeon (that can come in handy god forbid) have managed to clear my schedule for MORE SAILING!  Finally I make a damn good Pain Killer, am SCUBA certified and also an instrument rated pilot (so navigation is perhaps my strongest suit.) I generally chose catamarans despite my very "traditional" roots: as I sail them more I realize they are simply superior design, comfort, and technology. The physics dictate it. But I'm sure I'll get a lot of feedback" for that remark. So let's talk!  Email me at wcn9001 "at" nyp.org.

Over the past two years in the MSC, I’ve thoroughly enjoyed helping people learn the basics. Some reviews: “Great instructor! …Amazingly patient…very thorough… a pleasure to be around; a gentleman...straight forward and clear…ultra professional, no-nonsense, incredibly informed…a great teacher…very patient…can communicate essential aspects of sailing very efficiently…very thorough—very patient as well…everybody learned everything…great spirit from the whole team!...would highly recommend the experience…”  In the coming weeks, the crew of One Luff will be meeting up to practice cooking and dining together in small space, and to decide our per-capita lime tonnage. When we set sail in the BVI, having a small crew will assure everybody gets lots of practice safely driving the boat, trimming the sails and saluting each other. There will be snorkeling. I’ll arrange sunsets. One Luff! Avast me at dbell@belladvertising.com or 212-255-8500.
