Sailboat Maintenance

Manhattan Sailing Club owns a large fleet of sailboats.  In 2007, these consist of 28 J/24s, 1 J/105, 1 Sonar, 1 12-Meter, 2 Formula 1s and 7 Lasers.  It is expected that this fleet will continue to grow as the club grows.

Boats need on-going maintenance and Manhattan Sailing Club wishes to keep all of its boats maintained to very high standards.  The club is proud of the quality is has achieved.

Maintenance Staff is needed to repair the boats ever spring and then to keep them in top operating condition during the sailing season.

To succeed in this position, candidates should be comfortable with hand tools, be organized and understand the importance of keeping a work area and tool box clean and polished.  Sailing and boating experience is a big plus.

This is an outdoor position.  You will work from floating docks, on boats and if qualified, may be able to drive a powerboat to perform specific maintenance duties.

The starting salary for this position is $15 per hour.  Candidates with exceptional experience may be paid more and candidates in training may be paid less.

Candidates normally work Monday to Friday, 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. although occasional weekend days are also required to support club regattas and other events.

During a typical day, you will be engaged in gassing up the boats (i.e. pouring gas into the portable tanks), opening up the boats so they can air out and dry, inspecting bilges and pumping out any water.  Each day, members of the sailing club also list repair requests.  The Maintenance Staff's duty is to read all requests and to make the repairs happen immediately.  You will need to source parts working with other club staff, change halyards, cleats and other items that break from time to time.

There is a lot to accomplish each day and a successful Maintenance Staff is someone who can stay focused and complete jobs.  This is not a social job where you hang around a water cooler and chat with the public.

Exceptional candidates may be given year round employment.  During the spring and fall, this job would involve driving a truck and boat trailer, rigging and stepping masts and otherwise setting up or breaking down the 30+ boat operation.  Employees who work at the club for more than 6 months also qualify for health insurance.
