Mates Mates are an entry level position into the marine industry. Mates assist USCG-licensed captains in the operation of several vessels. To be a good mate, you need to be well-presented and dressed. Partial uniforms will be provided. You need to be dependable and show up always on-time (or 5 minutes is better). You need to be focused on your job and fast at tying up boats and making cleats. You need to be aware of your surroundings and be able to anticipate customer safety and needs. If you are energetic, a self-starter, learn quickly, take direction well and can focus on details, this can be you entry into the marine industry. If you are a slacker who likes to do the least amount of work, stand around chatting with your fellows and take cell phone calls and text message friends, this job is not for you.
Mate salaries range from $12 to $15 per hour depending on experience and skill. The introductory mate positions are on the "Honorable William Wall," a USCG-certified vessel which is anchored in NY Harbor. Normal hours of operation are Tuesday through Friday evenings from 5:15 p.m. to close (averaging about 9 to 10 p.m.) and Saturdays from 12 noon to 8 p.m. 2 Mates are employed onboard each evening. Mates who excel at the starting level on the Honorable William Wall can advance through several openings.
Other avenues of advancement include joining the Maintenance Staff at Manhattan Sailing Club, becoming a mate for the Dennis Conner's America's Cup Sailing Experience or on the 12 Meter "America II," becoming a Dock Master at North Cove, entering the fielding of Customer Service as a bar tender on the Honorable William Wall or Dock Master at Manhattan Sailing Club, and eventually training to become a USCG-licensed Captain yourself.
