The "Sail
Patrol"
Sail Patrol
Agreement
Sail Patrol Members
Are you an experienced skipper
and would you like to sail for free?
Manhattan Sailing Club is looking for volunteers to
become members of a “Sail Patrol.” The Sail
Patrol concept is borrowed form the ski industry.
Experienced skiers volunteer their time to serve on
a “Ski Patrol.” In return, they get to ski for free.
Our club is adopting this concept
to sailing and we will
invite up to 20 sailors to join the first “Sail
Patrol.” To qualify, you need to be an excellent skipper and educator.
Members of the Sail Patrol will
be able to skipper boats as part of the club’s Fleet Captain Program. This is a
free educational program which provides training and experience to
crew members. Just like in skiing, there
will be responsibilities and limitations for the “Sail
Patrol.”
-
First, you will
serve as the eyes and ears of the club out on the
water. If you see any club boats operate in a manner which might not be
the best, you will contact that skipper to discuss
the situation.
-
Second, you only get to
sail as part of the Fleet Captain Program. You are not allowed to take club
boats sailing outside this program and you are not allowed to bring guests.
-
Third, you must be an
active participate and sail at least 6 times per month (no upper limit on
how many times you can sail).
Sailors who
wish to join the Sail Patrol will be interviewed by the club Fleet
Captain. If accepted, you will be given an orientation to the boats as well as
a series of standards and expectations. Your mission will be to ensure club
standards are followed and train others about these expectations.
This is a new program and all
details will be worked out based on operating experience during this first
season. There will be some scheduling limitations and members of the Sail
Patrol will only be given Fleet Captain boats which are not reserved by other
club skippers. The performance of all members of the Sail Patrol will be
reviewed during the year.
The Sail Patrol opportunity is
open to all sailors (including
current club members). If a skipper member of
the club applies to join the Sail Patrol and
is accepted, they could resign their membership and
sail for free. However, the Sail Patrol can only sail as part of the Fleet
Captain program and you are not allowed to bring guests. If a regular member
who is qualified to be a skipper but does not have
Skipper Privileges at the club joins the Sail Patrol,
they could skipper as part of the Fleet Captain Program without any additional
dues. And if they maintained their regular membership, they would then still
have normal club privileges such as crewing and racing with members at other
times, visiting the clubhouse in the harbor, etc.
To apply to
become a member of the Sail Patrol, please complete the following form.
Your form will then be sent to the club Fleet Captain who may follow up with
you.
