There are 2 types of turnbuckles
found on shrouds at the club.
These are:
- Series 200 Open Body - the
new system - identified by the turnbuckle which is an open body with female
threads.
- Navtec Series 500 - the old
system - identified by the joining turnbuckle which is a threaded rod.
When ordering replacement
shrouds, please update to the new system with the Series 200 Open Body. Do
not order any more shrouds with the Navtec turnbuckles.
Forestays should be 28' 4" in

Stanchions
Bases & Tubes
Stanchion bases and tubes have
undergone many improvements and changes over the years.
For the bases, there is a new
style (identified by 1 brace) and an old style (identified by 2 braces).
Because of the deck angle, there is a separate base for both the fore and aft
stanchion. With the new style, the forward stanchion base provides a 10
degree angle and the aft stanchion base provides a 15 degree angle (the old
style was slightly different).
For stanchion tubes, many race
J/24s are using 1 lifeline and a shorter height but we are using the standard
system of 2 lifelines and the full stanchion height. Order
stanchions from Waterline systems. I had to ask and
make sure they had a "nun" shaped head and two holes for lifelines. They have to
drill and install a wear collar so I was encouraged to order a batch (12 I
think, perhaps 10). They they can set up a jig etc.

Jib/Genoa Cars
& Tracks
When installing any thru-deck fitting on
jib car tracks, sufficient 3M 101 must be used. Failure to use enough
caulking can lead to water getting into deck, one of the biggest problems which
could affect a J/24.

Padeye
When installing, extra care must
be taken when drilling holes through the deck.
These holes must be drilled perfectly straight.
Failure to do so will mean that the
backing plate will not work. Before installing padeyes,
double check the length of the cap screws. These screws should be the
minimum length to allow the installation of the nut on the bottom side but not
stick out beyond the nut once tightened.

Lazarettes
Rudder
The spacing and angle of the
rudder gudgeons is unique to every boat. When removing more than one
rudder at the same time, it is essential the rudders are numbered and that the
same rudder is reinstalled on the same boat. If the rudder is not put back
on the correct boat, the gudgeons will not line up perfectly and there will be
friction, making the boat more difficult to steer. Racing sailors require
the rudder to be totally free moving without any friction in order to be able to
feel the helm of the boat. If a rudder has friction, the transom gudgeons
should first be checked for possibly being bent. If they are straight, the
gudgeons should be completely removed from the rudder and connected to the boat
with the pintels. Then fill the old rudder gudgeon holes with epoxy.
Sand & paint. The hang rudder in gudgeons on stern, drill new holes and
install.
Gudgeons on Rudder
There are 2 gudgeons
on the rudder, upper and lower. The upper is shorter than the lower.
Note: The lower
gudgeons break on the boats occasionally. There is no way to predict when a gudgeon
will break except by inspection. Occasionally, but not always, it is possible to
identify a tiny crack in the gudgeon before it breaks. This can only be done while
the boat is out of water so every spring before launching, all lower gudgeons should be
carefully inspected.
Gudgeons on Transom

-
1/4 x 7/8 in diameter washers
-
1/4 x 20 lock nuts
-
Install bolts with
white 3M 101 sealant
Notes: The gudgeons
on the transom occasionally bend when a gudgeon on the rudder brakes (usually the lower
gudgeon) and the rudder is still used even though attached by only one pintel. This
sometimes caused the upper gudgeons on the transom to be bent out of alignment. You
will notice resistance when inserting the pintel or when steering the boat.
If a transom gudgeon is bent, it must be replaced to ensure smooth operation of
the rudder.

Previously,
we were testing Aqua Signal Series 22.
These were not strong enough to withstand the movement on the bow and the tops
kept coming off. Do not use any more of these and change over the perko.

Sound Producing
Device
Over many years, the club has
tried to provide a variety of horns on the boats. However, all types of
horns have proven a consistent maintenance issue, either disappearing or
breaking. We are required to provide a sound producing device on the boat
and this should be used when exiting the marina. Beginning in 2005, we are
changing over our system to install a storm whistle which will be permanently
mounted to the aft pulpit. This whistle will produce a loud sound
sufficient for warning traffic when departing North Cove and for signaling out
on the water. Skippers are also encouraged to bring their own personal
horns (just like they bring their own VHFs) when sailing if they wish a more
traditional sound producing device.

As you turn the tap, it cuts into the metal and starts to lead into the hole.
The metal chips flow into the flute spaces and will cause the tap to turn hard
unless the chips are broken. The chips are broken and the pressure on the
tap is released by reversing the tap direction every 1/4 or 1/2 turn.
