History:  Begun in 2004 by TJ Dalton, the Hedge Fund Regatta is growing into an annual institution where companies can compete on a friendly basis and also raise money for charity.

Sailing Instructions

Name of Event: Fifth Annual Hedge Fund Regatta

Eligibility:  Participation is by invitation. This regatta is only open to hedge fund companies.

Dates: Because of the event's popularity, this has now grown into a multi-day event.  There will be 2 preliminary regattas on July 10 & July 14. The top half of each preliminary regatta is invited to participate in the Championship Regatta which will be Wednesday, August 20, 200.

Schedule: On each race day:
Boats available for rigging - 5 p.m
Skippers Meeting - 6 p.m.
First Race - 6:45 p.m.
Second Race (weather permitting) -
immediately following Race 1.
Awards presentation back at dock

Boats: Teams will race on identical J/24 sailboats provided by the Manhattan Sailing Club.

Sails:  Teams must race with sails provided with the boats.  Spinnakers will not be allowed in the Preliminary Regattas.  Spinnakers will be permitted for the Championship (however, teams must provide their own spinnakers.  If you wish to have a special spinnaker made with your corporate logo, please contact the club.)

Crew: J/24s usually race with five people. Six people is the maximum and three the minimum. A Manhattan Sailing Club member will race with each boat to provide local knowledge and familiarity with the equipment and harbor procedures.  However, the club member is not permitted to steer the boat during the race.

Courses: Courses will be determined by the race committee.

Rules: This regatta will be governed by the Racing Rules of Sailing. 

Trophies:   The winning team will receive the Hedge Fund Cup, a perpetual trophy which they can keep for one year.  The top three teams will also receive a trophies. In addition, each team is required to bring a humorous gift which they will award to the team finishing directly behind them.

Entry Fee: This is a charity regatta which raises money for "Operation Optimist," NYC's first junior sailing program in the harbor organized by the New York Harbor Sailing Foundation.  The entry fee is a $2,000 donation (you get to sail one or two evenings depending on your success). More details on this program are at www.nyharborsailing.com.  The Foundation is registered with the Internal Revenue Service as a 501(c)(3) and all donations are tax-deductible to the extent allowed by law.
