Summary

Your company can charter a group of sailboats from the Manhattan Sailing Club for a One Day Corporate Regatta. Many companies do this each year to entertain clients, employees and associates.

Boats

You will sail on identical "J/24s" which are owned by the Manhattan Sailing Club. J/24s are 24 feet in length and great boats for day sailing in the harbor. They are fast and responsive and perform well in a wide variety of conditions. For One Day Corporate Regattas, you can reserve up to 10 boats.

Crew

Boats usually sail with 4 crew plus one skipper for a total of 5 people. Manhattan Sailing Club has members who are willing to volunteer as skippers and help you and your guests sail the boats.

Manhattan Sailing Club is located at North Cove in front of the World Financial Center in Lower Manhattan. The club keeps it's main fleet of J/24 sailboats on these docks. The club also keeps more J/24s at the Liberty Harbor Marina in Jersey City.

Dates & Times

One Day Corporate Regattas can be scheduled any day of the week (except Tuesday and Wednesday evenings). Sailors usually arrive at the docks between 5:30 and 6 p.m. There is a quick orientation and then teams rig the boats and head out into the harbor by 6:30 p.m. After racing, teams are usually back to the dock and have put away their boats by 8 p.m.

Regatta Format

Most One Day Corporate Regattas consist of 1 or 2 short races around windward-leeward courses set by the race committee. Short courses allow for two races and keeps teams relatively close. The race committee normally sets buoys in the cove between Ellis Island and Liberty State Park. This cove is outside commercial shipping channels and has less current than the harbor. If conditions permit, two races are run and the winner is the team with the best combined score.

Spectator Boats

Some corporations increase participation in their One Day Corporate Regattas by chartering a spectator boat. This allows non-sailing people to participate by watching the action. There are several charter boats available at North Cove.

Trophies

At the end of a regatta, organizers often award trophies to the winning teams. Traditional sailing trophies are available from Eclipse at 800-343-0710 or www.eclipsetrophy.com.

Post Race Celebrations

Many companies host a dinner or party after racing at a nearby bar or restaurant which overlooks North Cove.

Insurance & Liability

Manhattan Sailing Club carries a club insurance policy with P&I coverage of $3 million. In the event of damage to the equipment through a collision or other cause, the participating corporation is responsible for up to $2,000 per occurrence which is the policy deductible for racing.

Cost

The cost for a One Day Corporate Regatta is $590 per boat plus NYS sales tax. This fee covers using the boat in the evening (from 5 to 8 p.m.) or during the day (10 a.m. to 4 p.m.). Also included is the race committee which will run the regatta.
