Notice of Race

Yacht Club de Monaco has extended an invitation to the Manhattan Sailing Club to participate in their annual Primo Cup.

We have accepted their challenge to "defend the honor of the Manhattan Sailing Club."

For our first effort, we have chosen to race in the highly competitive Mumm 30 Class.

Racing will be Friday, February 9 through Sunday, February 11.

Mumm 30s are high performance boats raced by crews of 7 people.

There will be many professional sailors in this class and the overall level of competition is very high.  Our goal in this first event is to gain knowledge and experience, finish with a few boats behind us and win all of the social competitions.

To this end, we will be fielding both racing teams and social teams.

Racing Teams - Our 2 Mumm 30 Racing Teams will be captained by Austin Fragomen and TJ Dalton.  They will select their crew from among club members.  One spot on each boat will also be for a non-member who is a "world-class expert" on these boats to help our teams race.  The expert will also be selected by the Team Captains.

Social Teams - All club members are invited to join this expedition to Monaco as part of our club's Social Team.  If we do not win on the water, we shall win on land!  The instructions to our social team will be, "Sleep until 12 noon every day, ride a fancy powerboat out to watch some racing and then stay up all night long partying."  It will be especially important that our social sailors find the other racing teams and keep them up all night as well.

This event is primarily designed for club members.  However, if a club member wishes to bring a special guest, they may do so as part of the social team but not racing team (because there are only a few racing spots, these are reserved for members).  A member wishing to register a guest may do so using the registration form.

Dress Code & Team Uniforms - Yacht Club de Monaco is an elegant club and our racing and social teams will be expected to dress appropriately.  Our club will issue dress guidelines for daytime and evening dress code.  We will also select some regatta gear which is expected to be Gill brand equipment.  Members will be able to purchase this clothing at special rates.

Each participating member will be presented with a club tie (for men) or a club scarf (for women) compliments of Manhattan Sailing Club.  Special gold bullion blazer patches will also be presented to the first 15 members who sign up.

Registration Fees - The cost for chartering a Mumm 30 race boat is expected to be around $3,000.  This cost will be paid by the sailors who race on the boat.  The Team Captain will be responsible for deciding how to divide this up among the team.  For Social Team Members, there will be a $390 registration fee payable to the Manhattan Sailing Club to help cover other club expenses associated with the regatta.  Registration form.

Airfare - Members are free to select any means of transportation to get to Monaco.  There are direct flights from New York to Nice.  From Nice, you can take a helicopter or taxi to Monaco.  You could also fly first to Paris for some R&R or to a skiing resort, etc, etc.   The first day of racing is Friday, February 9 so you might consider arriving in Monaco on February 8.

Hotels - Margot deFrance has arranged for an excellent deal at our Team Hotel, the super glamorous Fairmont.  Details are here.

Food, libations, etc. - Members will be responsible for their own food and libations while they are in Monaco.  According to the Notice of Race, there is a crew party on Saturday evening.
