Manhattan Sailing Club
2008 Team Captain Agreement

Being a Team Captain is one of the most important privileges a member can have.  Boats are allocated to members who have demonstrated responsibility, safety and commitment to the principles of the club.

I, _____________________________________________________________, agree to

1) Put members first.  I agree to build my team from other members.  I understand that racing guests are discouraged.  If I have a guest who wishes to race more than a few times, I will ask them to join the club.

2) Not touch boats.  I understand that the quality of our fleet is the highest priority at the club.  I will attempt to prevent any and all contact between my boat and another.  I understand that even the slightest touch can cause damage.  I take responsibility for whenever my boat touches anything.

3) Not alter my boat.  I recognize the club makes a big effort to keep all boats standardized.  I also recognize that boats are used by cruising sailors in addition to racers and that cruisers like sheets and halyards to be longer.  I will make sure no one from my teams cuts any halyards or sheets, puts tape on the boat or spinnaker pole, writes on the deck or installs any fittings on the boats.

4) Nominate two members of my team to attend the following events

  • Season launching day: Saturday 29 March

  • Raising the mast event: Mid April, Dates to be advised

  • Decommissioning: Sunday 19 October

  • Attend race committee meetings: Dates to be advised

I recognize that all private race boat owners have to do this and the club requests me and my team to participate.  I will arrange for members of my team to be at all events to help.

5) Put camaraderie ahead of competition.  I understand the club is trying to create a friendly atmosphere. I understand this is club racing not national or international competition.  I will ensure that my boat exhibits a friendly and club-like attitude towards other teams.  I will not use the rules to take advantage of situations or cause difficulty to other teams which might not know the rules as well.  If I am involved in an incidence on the water, I will show leadership among my crew and not blame the other team.
