Commodore Michael Fortenbaugh is considering the possibility of building a high level racing team made of club members.  The goal would be to compete in the club Tuesday evening series and then represent the club in a variety of events such as the US Sailing Match Race Championship, International Yacht Club Challenge, Match Race Challenge in Monaco in December, the Primo Cup in Monaco in February as well as other events.  He is looking for members who have extensive sailing experience or who have significant experience and are willing to develop their skills.  Candidates must also be able to train once every other week and travel to regattas (which will include events during weekdays).  Interested candidates will be solicited from the membership and tryouts will be held early spring.  If you might be interested in racing with the Commodore at a high level, please send an email describing your racing experience, relevant data and availability to mike@myc.org.  May 2008

Jim & Theresa Hedleston write (March 1), "As many of you may know, club member Lacey Gallagher had been battling cancer for the past 3 year.  Unfortunately for all of us, she passed away last week here in the city.

For those of you that have known her over the years from the club or from any of the Caribbean Regatta's she attended she was a fun loving soul and a real fighter.  She was always there with that big bright smile and that laugh.  We will all miss her terribly.

If you have seen her over the past several year, she was probably in the company of her boyfriend Mark.  They were actually married this past Valentines Day before she became more affected by her disease.

Her service was this past Sunday in Manhattan. The family has requested donations to the Ovarian Cancer Research Fund if you are interested:

Gordon Gower reports that Leonardo Trevor Silius (Lenny) sailed into this world early Tuesday morning! It was a bit stormy, but Mom and son are doing very well and getting the best of care at Beth Israel Hospital; we'll all be at the home port Friday! - As for the birth date; Our son just turned the worst date in New York history into the BEST day of our lives!!! Sept 2007

Angela de la Rosa reports, “Vicki and Christopher are happy to have a new baby sister Sarah Elizabeth, she was born Sept 5th 11:30pm. We are at home and doing well.  See you at the docks soon!  Angela, John and Vicki, Christopher and Sarah.  Sept 2007

Nancy Parmalee writes, "I am looking to do a transatlantic crossing (or similarly long voyage) sometime in the next year. This would be my first time. I want a new challenge and this seems like a good one. Mostly I want to get offshore and sail really far for a long time :)  I'm competent on a boat and easy to get along with, learn quickly, don't mind rough conditions, and I'm honing my navigation skills. I've done plenty of shorter (overnight) deliveries, offshore races, good experience on 40-60 foot boats (and smaller). I'm a night owl and generally happy to take night watches and tolerate general sleep deprivation well.  If anyone knows of a good boat and crew, safety minded and smart (and preferably fun!)...please let me know. I can be reached at nlp2104@columbia.edu."  July 2007

David Bacon writes, “I'm looking for opportunities to crew on coastal and offshore deliveries this summer and fall, including a caribbean run in late  November/early December.  I've done one delivery from Anapolis to  Saint Martin and  a number of coastal deliveries and races up and  down the east coast.  Please contact me at dfb@watson.ibm.com July 2007

Wesley Freeburg writes, "Sailmaker UK Halsey has released an excellent Man-Overboard training video, depicting crew overboard recover techniques when under Spinnaker. See http://www.ukhalsey.com/LearningCenter/mob.asp. You'll probably need to give them an e-mail address for access. Well worth it!" May 2006

Wes Freeburg writes, "Official NOAA Nautical charts for free online! Check out: http://chartmaker.ncd.noaa.gov/ The site also has free viewers. In the United States, all official nautical paper charts produced by NOAA's Office of Coast Survey (OCS) are available for download. A fundamental tool of marine navigation, NOAA's Raster Navigational Charts are produced by scanning at high resolution. NOAA adds data describing the chart, its datum, projection, and they can be updated with Notices to Mariners. I recommend charts designated 12334, 12335 and 12341 for "studying" our sailing area." Mar 2006

Wesley Freeburg has updated the Crew Overboard description available on our web-site under "Club Info" - "Using Club Boats" based on the results of testing done at the Crew Overboard Symposium 2005, in San Francisco, CA. See http://www.myc.org/Using%20Club%20Boats/crew_overboard.htm for a detailed discussion of these important maneuvers. Dec. 2005

Jacqueline Swensen recommends a knot website www.grogono.com/knot

Here's an incredible website for local river and harbor charts going back to the 1800's. http://anchor.ncd.noaa.gov/ Click on New York and enjoy!

The UK Sailmakers website has an animated rules quiz. This is a page that must be checked out by every serious racer: http://www.uksailmakers.com/RulesQuiz/index.html

Joe O'Connor reports on a fabulous webpage with shows knot being tied in animation.  Check www.mistral.co.uk/42brghtn/knots/42ktmenu.html.
